Psychology for All Conference

The London and Home Counties Branch held a Psychology For All conference on 26th March 2011. The conference objective was to inform and promote psychology to the general public. 450 people attended a very stimulating and informative day, with keynote talks from the BPS President, Gerry Mulhern, Professor Richard Wiseman and Geoffrey Beattie.

Dementia is one of the biggest challenges ahead for the UK’s ageing population. New research was presented on a programme that was developed in line with service users and carers, and cost-effectiveness critical for an evidence-based cash-strapped NHS. Based upon these developments, an improved way of treating dementia using psychological approaches was described.

Public Engagement and Developmental Psychology: Making Impacts

John Oates was an author of the "Development Matters" element of DCSF Early Years Foundation Stage. He talked about his work in establishing the EU-funded Sure Start programme "Biztos Kezdet" across Hungary, based on the EYFS. John recently led a project producing a developmental journal for children with additional needs, and is also involved in provision of health visiting support for mothers with young infants.
